Safer Driving
It is important to gain as much practise as you can while you are learning to drive. In order to accompany a learner driver you must have held a full driving licence for at least three years and be at least 21 years old. When accompanying a learner driver, remember:
- Patience is vital, as the learner driver is not as experienced as you and will make mistakes. Help to correct them.
- Prepare for other road users to not be as considerate towards the learner driver.
- Take every opportunity to involve the driver. They will be more receptive to learning. For example, get them to talk about the decisions they make.
- Encourage and praise when the driver does well. Explain fully how they can correct any mistakes made.
Before you start to practise it is important to gain experience from a fully-qualified driving instructor. Driving can be hazardous; the aim of a driving instructor is to teach you important skills and to minimize any possible risks. |
