A guide to selling a vehicle

There are four ways of selling your car; privately; to a dealer possibly in the course of a part exchange deal; at an auction sale; to a scrap dealer/insurer/finance company following the vehicle being written off after an accident. There are some important points that are common to all and some that are unique to each.

  1. You will need a Registration Document so the buyer can check the vehicle’s details. If you have mislaid yours, a duplicate may be obtained by writing to the DVLA in Swansea. There are several types and instructions for such disposal are on each.
  2. When the vehicle has been sold/disposed of and you did not have a Registration certificate, you must inform the DVLA the vehicle is no longer in your possession.
  3. Don’t forget to quote its make, number and the exact time and date of the disposal.
You will need an MOT Certificate if the vehicle is over three years old. If you have mislaid yours, a duplicate may be obtained though a fee will be charged for this.
  4. Always make sure the car is clean and emptied of all your possessions. If it looks its best, it will help get you the price you want.
